Inaugural Barcelona RX gives Petter his third win of the season
The inaugural Barcelona RX tested the World RX drivers to their limit, difficult gravel sections as well as a large jump added to the spectacle for those watching in the stadium grandstands.
iON athlete Petter Solberg didn’t have the easiest run through the heats including a spin in heat three when he clipped a barrier in the loose section of the track. Lining up on the second row for the semi-final a composed drive gave Petter a second place finish. Some final set up tweaks by Petter’s team and the car was ready for the final.
A great launch and a well-executed overtake at turn one gave Petter the lead. That was the opportunity that Petter needed and the gap to the other’s grew to the flag. Petter said, “this win means even more today because my son Oliver also won in crosskart back in Sweden – I spoke to him before the final and he was teasing me telling me I had to win because he did. I think it worked!”
The SDRX driver’s third win of the season means he holds a 35 point lead in the championship with three events to go. The championship now heads to another Formula 1 track, Istanbul, for the next round of the World RX season.
